US company acquires Wendy’s New Zealand, marking the end of a 35-year era for West Auckland family
Flynn Group, a leading franchise operating giant, has made a significant move by acquiring Wendy’s New Zealand, ending the 35-year tenure of the West Auckland-based Lendich family. The popular American burger franchise was put up for sale in 2022, leading to its acquisition by Flynn Group for an undisclosed sum.
As the largest franchise operator in the world, Flynn Group announced the acquisition of Wendco (NZ), the sole franchisee of the Wendy’s brand in New Zealand. This strategic move expands Flynn Group’s international presence, following their recent purchase of the master license for Wendy’s and Pizza Hut in Australia.
Wendy’s New Zealand has a strong foothold in the country, with over 20 restaurants and 500 employees. The acquisition presents Flynn Group with an opportunity to further its growth ambitions internationally and strengthen its partnership with the beloved Wendy’s brand.
Ron Bellamy, the Chief Operating Officer of Flynn Group, stated that the acquisition of Wendy’s New Zealand business provides a compelling opportunity to continue their international growth ambitions and enhance their partnership with the iconic Wendy’s brand. He emphasized the group’s commitment to carrying forward the 35-year tradition of customer satisfaction established by Wendco New Zealand.
The Lendich family, who introduced Wendy’s to New Zealand in 1988, has been instrumental in the brand’s success. Founder Danny and Dianne Lendich, along with their daughter Danielle who served as the chief executive, have played a pivotal role. Danielle will continue to support the business as an advisor to Flynn Group during the transition, ensuring a seamless handover.
With a global presence across renowned brands such as Applebee’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, and Planet Fitness in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, Flynn Group’s acquisition of Wendy’s New Zealand marks a significant milestone in their expansion strategy. This move highlights their commitment to growth and innovation in the franchise industry.
