Unveiling of High-Performance Land Rover Defender OCTA Scheduled for 3 July
2024 is shaping up to be a significant year for large, slab-shaped 4×4 vehicles equipped with powerful turbocharged V8 engines. Following the recent launch of the updated Mercedes-AMG G63, a new rival is set to enter the scene – the Land Rover Defender OCTA, scheduled to make its debut on 3 July.
Initially mentioned in March, the OCTA is expected to come with a twin-turbo V8 engine, speculated to be the same 4.4-litre BMW unit found in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. With the high-performance SV version of the Range Rover Sport boasting 626bhp, it represents a substantial leap from the current range-topping Defender powered by JLR’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8.
To handle the immense power output, Land Rover has introduced a cutting-edge ‘6D Dynamics’ suspension system for the OCTA. This hydraulic system effectively manages pitch and roll, enabling the vehicle to maintain a nearly level stance during acceleration, braking, and cornering. Additionally, the system allows for optimal independent wheel articulation off-road, highlighting the OCTA’s capabilities in challenging terrains.
The rigorous testing program for the OCTA has taken it through various locations, including the Arctic Circle, Nürburgring, and deserts of Dubai and Utah. From rock crawls to rally stages, the OCTA has proven its versatility and agility under different conditions.
While it remains uncertain if all three Defender body styles will receive the OCTA treatment, the teasers released so far focus on the mid-sized 110 variant. The vehicle showcases a unique diamond within a circle motif both inside and out, symbolizing future flagship Defenders as Land Rover looks to establish the model as a standalone brand.
With only 1,070 units slated for the UK in its first year, the OCTA is positioned as an exclusive model. Interested buyers can attend global preview events leading up to the July launch to get a closer look at the vehicle and potentially secure one for themselves at a premium price.
