Unveiling of Fresh Plans for Sunderland’s Pavilion
Plans have been submitted to Sunderland City Council for the construction of a new ‘pavilion’ structure in Keel Square, which will feature a large screen for events and exhibitions.
The proposed ‘Sunderland Pavilion’ is described as a contemporary exhibition and immersive space that will serve as the centerpiece for Expo Sunderland, a series of events celebrating innovation and ambition in the city until 2026. The structure aims to explore the future of housing beyond 2030.
The pavilion, developed by Sunderland City Council’s regeneration company Siglion, will replace the existing digital screen at Keel Square with a temporary transparent structure set in a metal frame. It will be open to visitors in the summer and will host exhibitions, showcase local talent and innovation, and provide a viewing platform for the city’s new Culture House.
The upper deck of the pavilion will feature a 10m x 5m screen with two 5m x 5m screen ‘wings’. The screen will be made from translucent material, giving the appearance of 3D visuals, and will have the capability to live stream content from around the world. An audio system will also be integrated with the screen to enhance the visitor experience.
Funding for the pavilion and screen has been secured through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology 5G Innovation Regions Grant, highlighting Sunderland’s digital capabilities. Councillor Kevin Johnston, cabinet member for Dynamic City, sees the project as an opportunity to engage residents and visitors in a new and exciting way.
The Sunderland Pavilion is designed to showcase innovative concepts for the future home in Sunderland and will stand adjacent to the proposed location of the Culture House. The pavilion project aims to celebrate advancements in construction, technology, and collaboration, including showcasing renewable and sustainable living solutions.
Local firm Building Design Northern (BDN) has designed the pavilion to complement the surrounding architecture at Keel Square. Managing director Richard Marsden expressed pride in supporting a project that will be enjoyed by both locals and visitors to Sunderland.
The Sunderland Pavilion is part of a larger initiative to boost digital infrastructure and drive innovation in the North East region. The decision on the pavilion’s construction will be made after a period of council consultation, with a deadline set for May 6, 2024.
