Transforming Expo City Dubai into a Sanctuary for Stray Cats

Expo City Dubai has solidified its reputation as an animal-friendly community by providing safe spaces for about 80 stray cats. These dedicated areas are equipped with food, water, and beds, along with retractable walls that allow the cats to roam freely during cooler weather. Additionally, there are “cat condos” scattered around the shaded and grassy regions of the district.

Faida Sabouneh, the food safety and sustainability manager at Expo City Dubai, has been a key figure in this project. With a background in rescuing animals, Sabouneh has spearheaded efforts to ensure the well-being of the feline population in the area. The management at Expo City Dubai has supported these endeavors, highlighting the importance of wildlife protection and implementing an animal welfare program to care for the cats on-site.

The community’s commitment to animal welfare aligns with its overall sustainability goals. Wooden stations stocked with essentials for pets, such as water bowls and treats, are already available for residents to enjoy the neighborhood with their furry companions. The initiative to assist the stray cats was born out of the observation of a large cat population on the premises. Expo City Dubai covers the costs associated with essential services like TNR appointments and veterinary visits to maintain the health and safety of the cats.

The sanctuary established on-site serves as a refuge for vulnerable cats, providing them with a safe space for recovery or rehabilitation before finding forever homes. With a dedicated team overseeing the program, the public is also encouraged to participate by raising awareness about the importance of caring for stray animals. Sabouneh emphasizes the need for active engagement and monitoring of the animals’ well-being to ensure a sustainable future.

While there are no immediate plans for expansion, Expo City Dubai remains open to assisting other animal welfare organizations looking to create similar sanctuaries. By setting an example and offering support to the community, Expo City Dubai aims to inspire others to prioritize animal welfare and create safe havens for animals in need.
