Top Tourist Destinations for Mexican Travelers

Mexico is expected to generate an income of 48,381 million pesos from the consumption of tourist services during the second long weekend of 2024, according to the Ministry of Tourism. This mega bridge holiday is set to take place from March 15 to 18, with an estimated total income from tourist services reaching the mentioned amount.

During this time, as the celebration of Benito Juárez’s birth on March 21 approaches, a separate expenditure of 4,667 million pesos is anticipated. It is projected that approximately 1.64 million tourists will stay in hotels, marking a 4.1 percent increase compared to the same holiday period in 2023.

Out of the total tourist arrivals, it is expected that 77.5 percent will be domestic tourists (1.29 million) while 22.5 percent will be international tourists (351,000). Additionally, there will be an increase in alternative accommodations with 1.99 million tourists opting for stays in family homes, friend’s houses, or second homes, bringing the total number of national tourists to 3.29 million.

Moreover, collaborative economic accommodations provided by digital platforms are expected to host an additional 281,000 tourists, both Mexican and foreign, during the long weekend. Popular tourist destinations for this mega bridge holiday include Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, Los Cabos, Tulum, and Mazatlán, with high hotel occupancy rates ranging from 79.6 percent to 84.5 percent in beach destinations.

In city destinations, the estimated hotel occupancy rates include Querétaro at 69 percent, Puebla at 66 percent, Mexico City at 64.1 percent, Aguascalientes at 63.1 percent, Villahermosa at 57.6 percent, San Miguel de Allende at 51.7 percent, and San Cristóbal de las Casas at 50.6 percent. Overall, the tourism sector in Mexico is gearing up for a busy and profitable long weekend ahead.
