Three nights of events at the Pint Of Science Festival
The Pint of Science Festival recently concluded its successful 7th year in Liverpool, drawing in over 550 attendees across three days of engaging events. Covering a wide range of topics like ‘Why are you Hungry?’ and ‘Honey I Shrunk the Collider!’, the festival showcased the world’s largest collection of public science talks, held in over 25 countries and numerous cities globally.
The University of Liverpool played a significant role in the festival, with over 80 staff and students from different faculties participating by organizing events, giving talks, or taking part in ‘Shots of Science’ – a challenge to explain their research in just 3 minutes. Notably, The Pandemic Institute hosted ‘Mersey Marvels’ led by Professor Tom Solomon, underscoring Liverpool’s status as a hub for groundbreaking scientific research.
The 2024 Festival broke new ground by hosting events on the Wirral for the first time. The School of Veterinary Science held a night in Neston to share their cutting-edge research with the community. John Tulloch, Academic Lead for Public Engagement in IVES, emphasized the importance of connecting with the local community through engaging events like Pint of Science.
Across three nights, 14 different events unfolded in six different pubs, covering diverse topics like the ‘Science of Vision’, ‘Engineering in Nature’, ‘Making Memories’, and ‘Poo, Pets, and Dangerous Liaisons’. Attendees praised the festival, with comments like, “Great, fun evening, already looking forward to next year!” and “Absolutely fantastic, please do more”.
Laura Winters, Public Engagement Officer for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, highlighted the significance of Pint of Science in sharing research with local communities in an informal, engaging manner. She expressed pride in the quality of talks presented by staff and students from all three faculties.
