School students in the UAE return to school on Monday for the start of the academic year

School students in the UAE are gearing up to resume the academic year on Monday as the third term for the academic year 2023-2024 begins. The term will last for 11 weeks, comprising of 53 school days. The upcoming period from April 22-26 is earmarked for the announcement of the results of the second term exams.

During the third term, students will undergo a trial test from May 29 to June 4, followed by exams for Group (B) subjects. The final exams for the third term are scheduled from June 5 to 14, with Eid Al Adha holidays falling between June 15 and 18. The results of the term’s exams will be declared on July 5, with repeat exams taking place from July 8-12 and their results being released from July 13-15.

As the academic year comes to a close, students are expected to start their summer vacation on July 1, while teaching, technical, and administrative staff will begin their break on July 15. School principals across public and private institutions have assured their preparedness to receive staff and students in line with the directives issued by educational authorities in the UAE.

In a commendable move, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has directed the settlement of outstanding financial dues of UAE resident students in government schools amounting to Dhs155 million. This initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting students and ensuring their academic success.

UAE schools are actively promoting sustainability concepts, environmental awareness, and scientific thinking to foster sustainable development, in alignment with the upcoming COP28 climate conference in 2023. They are incorporating sustainability into their curricula and training teachers and administrators to instill environmental consciousness among students.

International schools in the UAE are also playing a key role in enhancing education and environmental awareness through interdisciplinary curricula emphasizing environmental preservation and active participation. The Chinese language curriculum specialist at the UAE Ministry of Education highlighted the incorporation of environmental topics in the “100 Schools Project” to educate students on sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

Moreover, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority recently organized reading activities and sessions in Dubai Public Library branches as part of the UAE Reading Month 2024 themed ‘UAE Reads’. This initiative underscores the Authority’s commitment to promoting reading and cultural values in the community in line with the National Reading Strategy 2016-2026.
