Roanoke College’s Theatre Receives Citizen Artist Award

The Theatre Roanoke College’s rendition of “Mac Beth” was recently honored with the Citizen Artist Award by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. This prestigious national award acknowledges programs that utilize theatrical productions to create a positive impact on society through artistic expression, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate cultural and physical world, and advocating for justice.

“Mac Beth,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” by Erica Schmidt, was brought to life by Theatre Roanoke College (TRC) during a trip to Albany, Georgia, from Feb. 6-10, 2024. The recognition for this outstanding production came a few weeks after the event.

The all-female cast, who initially performed the show at Roanoke on April 19-22, 2023, showcased their talent at the theater festival. The cast included Mary Langan ’26 as Witch 1, Natalie Arnold ’26 as Witch 2, Erin Trost ’24 as Witch 3, Kennedy Swineford ’26 as Macbeth, Hannah Pluim ’24 as Banquo, Emy Hampton ’24 as Lady Macbeth, and Hunter Gall ’26 as Macduff.

Individual students also received recognition at the festival. Bronte Micek ’25 and Swineford were semifinalists for the Musical Theatre Initiative, with Swineford also receiving the Musical Theatre Engaged in Voice award.

Nelson Barre, assistant professor of fine arts, expressed his pride in the work accomplished and shared at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He highlighted the significance of this recognition for a small program participating for the first time.
