Proposed Amendment of Emirate Council Laws by Kano Assembly

The Kano State House of Assembly has announced plans to recall and amend the State’s Emirate Council Law 2019 and Kano State Emirate amendment law 2023. This decision was brought forward by the majority leader of the House, Lawal Chediyar Yangurasa, and a member representing Dala Constituency during a recent plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore.

The Emirate Council Law was initially amended in 2019 during a period of conflict between then-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Emir Muhammadu Sunusi II. This amendment resulted in the subdivision of the Kano Emirate into five separate emirates – Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi – each with its own First Class Emir. This division ultimately led to the removal of Emir Sanusi from his position.

Speculation has been brewing in Kano regarding whether the current administration under Governor Abba Yusuf would reverse the fragmentation of the old Kano Emirate and restore it to its original status. The move by the State Assembly to recall and amend these laws may address these concerns and potentially lead to changes in the emirate structure.
