Polyolefins and Base Chemicals

Borealis, a global leader in advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions, is excited to announce the installation of a semi-commercial demonstration recyclate-based polyolefins (rPO) compounding line in Beringen, Belgium. Scheduled for construction in 2024, the line is expected to be fully operational by the first half of 2025.

Utilizing Borealis’ innovative Borcycle™ M technology, the state-of-the-art line will transform mechanically recycled post-consumer waste into high-quality rigid polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) materials. This versatile line can process a wide range of recyclate flakes from PP and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste sources, offering exceptional flexibility for various applications.

As a semi-commercial demonstration line, it will showcase the power of Borcycle M technology in producing mechanically recycled solutions that meet the demanding requirements of industries like mobility, consumer products, appliances, and energy. By integrating value-added recycled plastics into their product lines, Borealis’ customers can promote sustainability without compromising performance.

This investment will expand Borealis’ recyclate processing and compounding capacity while providing valuable operational experience and technological insight into recyclate processing. This knowledge will be crucial in scaling up this transformative technology and supporting the company’s commitment to a circular economy for plastics.

The installation of the compounding line in Beringen complements Borealis’ recent acquisitions of recyclate-based compounding business Rialti and advanced mechanical recycler Integra, further demonstrating its dedication to accelerating the shift towards a circular economy.

Mirjam Mayer, Borealis Vice President of Circular Economy Solutions, emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting customers in achieving their sustainability goals. This initiative aligns with Borealis’ EverMinds™ ambition to give plastic waste new life in high-value applications.

With a presence in over 120 countries and headquarters in Vienna, Austria, Borealis employs approximately 6,000 people. Operating under the ownership of OMV and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the company remains committed to safety, innovation, technology, and performance excellence, driving the transformation to a circular economy of polyolefins worldwide.
