“Personal AI agent from Apple works seamlessly with all your apps”

At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled its new AI system called Apple Intelligence. This system, comprised of advanced language and diffusion models, is designed to impact and enhance apps across Apple’s range of devices.

According to Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, Apple Intelligence is a groundbreaking personal intelligence system that integrates powerful generative models into iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This system utilizes personal context to provide users with intelligent features, such as prioritizing notifications to minimize distractions and offering AI writing aides for tasks like proofreading, rewriting, and summarizing text. These features will be available in a variety of system apps as well as third-party apps.

Apple Intelligence also incorporates computer vision capabilities, allowing users to create new images from existing photos. For example, users can generate images of friends surrounded by festive elements like cake and balloons, or turn a normal photo into an artistic sketch or animation. The system can also interact with various apps on a device, streamlining everyday actions and leveraging personal data to simplify tasks like finding specific photos or locating shared files.

While some users may have privacy concerns about providing Apple Intelligence access to personal data, Apple has taken steps to ensure data privacy. Most operations are performed on-device, powered by Apple’s latest processors, and any cloud-based operations are handled on Apple’s private data silos rather than public cloud services. Federighi emphasized that user data is only used to fulfill requests and is not stored or accessed by Apple.

Apple’s approach to developing and distributing AI capabilities is more measured compared to other companies in the space. CEO Tim Cook mentioned in a recent interview that Apple has invested significantly in AI research and development, totaling 0 billion over the past five years. While AI was not mentioned in the previous year’s WWDC keynote, Apple introduced machine learning-enhanced features in 2023, indicating a continued focus on AI technologies.

Apple Intelligence is set to be available for users to try out later this summer, offering a new level of personalized and intelligent features across Apple’s devices.
