Opinion on the 13th WTO Ministerial in Abu Dhabi

In response to the Thirteenth Session of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference held from February 26th to March 1st in Abu Dhabi, American Chemistry Council (ACC) Director of International Trade and Supply Chain, Jason Bernstein, expressed his views on the outcomes.

ACC and its members commend the WTO for their efforts in promoting a constructive approach to Trade & Environment (T&E) issues during the Ministerial. The discussions held in Abu Dhabi allowed for direct dialogue with WTO country delegates, Secretariat members, and leaders involved in key T&E discussions like the Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Trade and Environment Sustainability Structured Discussions (TESSD). The ACC looks forward to further engagement to establish an actionable agenda that facilitates trade and investment in economic models that promote environmental solutions and economic growth.

Bernstein also emphasized the importance of regulatory cooperation to prevent unnecessary barriers to trade, which can hinder both U.S. and international competitiveness and disrupt the supply chain’s resilience.

Furthermore, he welcomed the extension of the moratorium on e-commerce duties, highlighting the significance of digital trade in enabling chemical manufacturers and advanced manufacturing to combat climate change, enhance environmental sustainability, and strengthen downstream industries supported by chemistry.

Overall, the ACC’s statement reflects a positive outlook on the outcomes of the WTO Ministerial Conference and the collaborative efforts to address trade and environmental issues.
