New net-zero building set to open at MC2 in Masdar

Abu Dhabi is set to welcome one of its first net-zero energy office buildings this year in Masdar City, a leading technology and innovation hub known for its sustainable initiatives in the UAE’s capital.

The upcoming MC2 Headquarters building is part of the larger Masdar City Square development, which includes seven office buildings and a parking facility. What sets this building apart is its innovative solar photovoltaic panel canopy, which allows it to produce as much energy as it consumes. By integrating energy-efficient design, systems, and renewable energy technologies, the building aims to achieve net-zero energy status.

In addition to the MC2 Headquarters building, the development will feature six other buildings spanning a total area of 29,000 square meters and offering a gross floor area of 50,000 square meters. These buildings will be constructed with a focus on green construction specifications, resulting in an energy reduction of over 55 percent.

Located adjacent to existing developments within Masdar City, such as the Mohammed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence and the Siemens Middle East Headquarters, MC2 will also incorporate the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) Headquarters. The development will offer various amenities, including courtyards, a daycare, an amphitheater plaza, shaded pedestrian boulevards, a fitness center, a meditation room, and more.

Construction on Masdar City Square began in early 2022 with a commitment to achieving various certifications, such as LEED Platinum, WELL Gold, and Four-Pearl PBRS Estidama standards for sustainable buildings. These certifications emphasize energy efficiency, human health, and overall sustainability.

The project’s design focuses on passive architectural measures supplemented by technology, making it a standout project within Masdar’s portfolio of sustainable initiatives. The MC2 Headquarters building integrates solar panels into its architectural shading system, aiming to achieve Zero Energy certification by the International Living Future Institute.

Leading architectural and consulting firm Woods Bagot is responsible for the project’s design and construction supervision, while Faithful+Gould serves as the project management consultant. The masterplan of MC2 combines the ‘Masdar Building Grid’ and the ‘Environmental Grid’ to create a unique campus that prioritizes wellness and sustainability.

ASGC Construction is the main contractor for the MC2 project, overseeing civil works for all eight buildings, finishing works for four buildings, public areas, and associated infrastructure and MEP works. The innovative MC2 buildings further solidify Masdar City’s reputation as a regional leader in net-zero and green construction.
