New Music Director Appointed by L’Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier Occitanie

Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier Occitanie is set to usher in a new era with the appointment of Roderick Cox as its Music Director starting in September 2024. Cox will take over from Michael Schønwandt, who served as the principal conductor from 2015 to 2023.

Cox is no stranger to the opera orchestra, having conducted both orchestral and opera performances in the past. In fact, he is slated to return in May 2024 to lead the company’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème.

With a stellar reputation, Cox has collaborated with renowned ensembles worldwide. His upcoming engagements include performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, and various other orchestras across the globe. Since his debut with the English National Opera in 2024, Cox has conducted operas in prestigious venues like the Houston Grand Opera and San Francisco Opera.

A recipient of the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, Cox brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is a graduate of the Schwob School of Music and Northwestern University, with accolades such as the Conducting Prize from the Aspen Music Festival.

Expressing his excitement for the new opportunity, Cox shared on Facebook, “From the very beginning I felt a special connection with the players and the institution — we were able to establish very quickly a level of trust, which allowed us to freely make music and produce fantastic performances for our audience. I very much look forward to the bright and exciting future of projects with my new musical family!”

With Cox at the helm, Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier Occitanie is poised for a promising and vibrant season ahead.
