New Island Fusion restaurant now open in South Bend

A new Caribbean restaurant called Island Fusion had its grand opening in downtown South Bend on March 6. The restaurant, founded by owners Lorna and Kerwin Huggins from Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, combines Jamaican and Trinidadian cuisine to offer a unique dining experience.

Island Fusion’s menu features a variety of dishes inspired by Jamaican and Trinidadian culinary traditions, including fiery jerk chicken, pelau (a rice dish), barra (fried flatbreads), and fry bake served with salt fish and steamed vegetables. Lorna and Kerwin Huggins, who both developed a passion for cooking at an early age, decided to open the restaurant to showcase their culinary expertise and bring a taste of the Caribbean to South Bend.

Located inside the Emporium Building at 121 S. Niles Ave., Island Fusion serves Sunday dinners of island favorites, as well as soup and salad on Wednesdays and street food on Fridays. The Emporium Building, once home to the Emporium Restaurant, now houses multiple small restaurants, making it a popular destination for food enthusiasts in the area.
