New Head of Orchestra Operations announced by Birmingham Royal Ballet

Birmingham Royal Ballet Welcomes Claire Dersley as Head of Orchestra Operations

Birmingham Royal Ballet has appointed Claire Dersley as the Company’s new Head of Orchestra Operations, overseeing the acclaimed Royal Ballet Sinfonia, starting from July 1st.

Paul Murphy, the Company’s incoming music director and principal conductor, expressed his excitement about Claire joining the team. He stated, “I am absolutely delighted that Claire will be joining us as our new Head of Orchestra Operations. She brings a great deal of orchestral management experience and a genuine love for our Company to the role, and I’m really looking forward to working with her.”

Claire Dersley also shared her enthusiasm for her new position, saying, “I’m thrilled to accept the position of Head of Orchestra Operations with Birmingham Royal Ballet. I look forward to working closely with Paul Murphy to continue and expand upon the fantastic work that he and Koen Kessels have already been undertaking with the orchestra.”

With a background as the orchestra manager at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra since 2009, Claire has built strong relationships and improved working practices with musicians. She has collaborated closely with renowned music directors such as Andris Nelsons, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, and Chief Conductor Kazuki Yamada. Claire’s extensive experience includes tours across Europe and internationally, as well as working on notable projects like the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, BBC Proms, and award-winning recordings.

Before her time at CBSO, Claire spent three years at the BBC Concert Orchestra, contributing to TV and radio broadcasts, CD recordings, and various music festivals. A trained cellist, Claire studied music at Southampton University before transitioning into arts administration.

The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s resident orchestra, is known as Britain’s busiest ballet orchestra. In addition to performing with Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia collaborates with other leading ballet companies worldwide, including The Royal Ballet, Paris Opéra Ballet, New York City Ballet, and more. Their versatility and expertise have made them a sought-after ensemble in the ballet world.
