MASDAR Expresses Interest in Investing in Sarawak

KUCHING: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, known as MASDAR, is looking to invest in green energy, specifically focusing on solar energy in Sarawak. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed that the state government has identified an area in Murum to generate 1 gigawatt of green energy through hydro, inviting MASDAR to invest in this project.

“This significant investment will enhance our green energy production capabilities,” Abang Johari said during a media interview at the Gawai Dayak Open House at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

He also revealed that Sarawak will establish an office in Abu Dhabi, managed by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and PETROS. Abang Johari emphasized the importance of green energy in addressing global climate change and highlighted Sarawak’s potential in hydrogen production.

The Premier noted that the project will not only contribute to green energy initiatives but also enhance food security, as solar panels could be installed above plantations as seen in Sharjah, UAE.

While the initiative is projected to start after 2030, Abang Johari stressed that the focus is on securing a sustainable future for the younger generation. He highlighted the government’s efforts in providing free education to equip the youth with the knowledge to continue and benefit from these green energy projects in the future.
