Mammoet to Manage Monopiles for Wind Energy Initiatives
Mammoet Partners with Buss Ports for Significant Offshore Wind Projects in Europe
In a noteworthy collaboration, Mammoet, a renowned Dutch heavy-lift specialist, has secured a contract with logistics provider Buss Ports to manage the marshalling of 116 monopile foundations slated for two of Europe’s largest offshore wind energy projects. Situated in Germany and Denmark, the Nordseecluster A and Thor wind farms respectively are poised to bolster the region’s commitment to sustainable energy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Over the next year, Mammoet will oversee the intricate logistics involving these monopile foundations, each weighing up to 1,700 tons. This responsibility encompasses every phase from load-in and temporary storage to load-out at Buss Terminal Eemshaven in the Netherlands. Both wind farms are being developed by the German energy giant RWE, which underscores the growing significance of offshore wind energy in Europe’s energy landscape.
The challenge that Mammoet is undertaking is monumental. The monopile foundations, some reaching nearly 100 meters in length, are among the largest components used in offshore wind energy installations. To facilitate their transport and loading, Mammoet will employ self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) equipped with specialized saddles. This advanced technology allows for the efficient maneuvering of such colossal structures. The loading process will utilize a roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) linkspan ramp to move the monopiles directly onto storage dunes, where they will await their subsequent dispatch to the wind farms situated in the German and Danish sectors of the North Sea.
“This is a complex marshalling operation, with large components for both farms needing to be moved and managed on a single site,” noted Wouten Santen, project manager at Mammoet. His remarks highlight not only the logistical intricacies involved but also the necessity for precision and expertise in handling such heavy and cumbersome equipment. The team at Mammoet is leveraging its extensive experience in engineering and transport, specifically tailored to the unique requirements of monopile foundations.
Monopile foundations are a linchpin technology in the offshore wind industry.
