‘Local Charity Hosts Pre-Loved Prom Event Encouraging Young People to Dress Sustainably’

A Holme Valley charity is taking steps to promote sustainability and alleviate financial strain on families by organizing a fundraiser to encourage young people to consider using pre-loved outfits for Prom nights.

Known as the Pre-Loved Prom Event, the initiative aims to address the high cost of occasion wear, which can amount to hundreds of pounds and often serve a single purpose. The event is set to take place at Holmfirth Tech in Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, on Saturday, March 2, from 2 pm to 5 pm. Proceeds from the sale will benefit The Kirkwood, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, and the partnership.

Those interested in contributing to the event can donate prom wear such as dresses, suits, and shoes in good condition at The Kirkwood and Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice shops in Holmfirth. Prices for items at the sale will range from £15 for pre-loved items to £125 for new or nearly new designer pieces. The collection includes over 100 dresses, a variety of suits in excellent condition, as well as shoes and accessories.

Sian Taylor, a development worker at Holme Valley Climate Action Partnership, emphasized the growing popularity of school proms and the financial burden they can pose on families. She highlighted the environmental impact of fast fashion and the importance of choosing pre-loved items over new ones to reduce waste and costs for families and the wider community. Taylor expressed confidence in the quality of available items and stated that all proceeds from the event will support valuable causes.

In addition to its charitable efforts, Holme Valley Climate Action Partnership focuses on projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions and working towards a net-zero community. The organization collaborates with local groups, businesses, and individuals to combat climate change and welcomes partnerships to further their mission.
