Embracing Inclusion: The MENA Business Leadership Meeting for Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) – Significant strides towards the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are being made as the Special Olympics UAE plays host to the inaugural Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Business Leadership Meeting from November 15 to 17. This important gathering brings together influential leaders from 18 nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Mauritania, to forge a collective vision for inclusive sports and integration programs.

This three-day assembly is not merely a regional meeting; it is a vital platform for raising awareness about the rights and capabilities of individuals with disabilities, commonly referred to as “people of determination” within the UAE. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO), which exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to inclusive services and support for individuals facing challenges.

Among the luminaries participating in this pivotal event are Dr. Timothy Shriver, the Chairman of Special Olympics International, and Eng. Ayman Abdel Wahab, Regional President of Special Olympics MENA. Their presence underscores the significance of regional collaboration in advancing disability rights and inclusive sports initiatives. The meeting serves not only as a venue for sharing ideas and best practices but also as a means to amplify the voices advocating for change across the region.

One of the most noteworthy announcements made on the first day of the conference was the appointment of H.E. Talal Al Hashemi as the Chair of the MENA Regional Advisory Council. This newly established council is tasked with guiding regional efforts to create more opportunities for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Al Hashemi’s experience as the National Director of Special Olympics UAE positions him well to lead this initiative, as he will work to cultivate sustainable frameworks that promote inclusive sports participation and community engagement.

Eng. Ayman Abdel Wahab expressed his gratitude towards the UAE for hosting the meeting, stating, “The last time this meeting was held in Abu Dhabi was several years ago, before being paused due to the pandemic. We are thrilled to be back this year. Given the UAE’s remarkable leadership in the region on inclusion and empowerment for people of determination, participating delegations will gain invaluable insights from this successful model.” His remarks highlight not only the importance of the event but also the UAE’s pioneering role in championing disability rights and fostering an inclusive environment.

The establishment of the MENA Regional Advisory Council is a landmark achievement for the Special Olympics movement in the region. This council will comprise representatives from various MENA countries who will collaborate to assess existing programs and expand initiatives that cultivate the potential of individuals with disabilities. Under Al Hashemi’s stewardship, the council aims to mobilize regional support and resources necessary to elevate the standards of inclusion across communities.

Al Hashemi conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the trust placed in him, affirming that “The UAE’s dedication to the inclusion of people of determination has set a powerful example for the entire region.” He elaborated further, stating, “This new council will further strengthen our efforts, ensuring that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the tools and opportunities to succeed.” His commitment to fostering regional collaboration emphasizes the essential nature of collective efforts to drive meaningful change.

The agenda for the MENA Leadership Meeting is robust, covering a range of crucial topics such as program development, health initiatives, and community outreach efforts. Central to these discussions is the enhancement of Unified Sports programs, which integrate athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. This approach not only fosters a spirit of cooperation among participants but also challenges societal stereotypes about disability.

Drawing attention to the UAE’s leading role in the meeting, Ayman Abdel Wahab remarked, “The UAE’s commitment to inclusion is a model for the region, and we are confident that the work of the MENA Regional Advisory Council will help drive lasting change.” The optimism expressed by leaders at the meeting reflects a growing recognition of the power of collaboration in building inclusive communities that empower all individuals, including those with disabilities.

The narrative of inclusion and empowerment is crucial to dismantling barriers and creating equitable opportunities for everyone. As this meeting unfolds, it is clear that the commitment to fostering an inclusive society remains a shared priority, inspiring hope and catalyzing change throughout the MENA region.
