‘Large number of people expected to depart from Stansted during bank holiday weekend’

Stansted Airport is gearing up to welcome 150,000 passengers over the upcoming bank holiday weekend, as British Airways makes a return to the Essex hub. From May 25 to June 2, a total of 845,000 passengers will be traveling to or from Stansted, with 150,000 departures expected over the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Popular destinations for Londoners looking for a getaway include the Canary Islands, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Dubai, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Barcelona. Jon Fowler, London Stansted’s Chief Operating Officer, mentioned that the spring half-term break is a prime time for travel, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds in many destinations.

British Airways recently resumed flights from Stansted, offering trips to Nice, Florence, and Ibiza. Ciaran Brannigan, the airport’s Commercial Director, expressed excitement about these new services, emphasizing Stansted’s wide-ranging route network covering over 200 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Notably, Wizz Air celebrated its 20th anniversary, commemorating the launch of the airline, which initially operated out of Stansted before shifting its focus to Gatwick and Luton. Despite the change in base locations, Wizz Air executives rang the opening bell at the London Stock Exchange as part of the anniversary festivities. As passenger numbers continue to rise, airports like Stansted are preparing for a busy period ahead and advising travelers to plan their journeys carefully to minimize any potential delays.
