Former Member of Parliament from Ebon Atoll, John Silk, has been unanimously appointed as the Marshall Islands Ambassador to the United Nations following a resolution introduced in Parliament on Monday. This decision was made without any contest, showcasing the support Silk has from fellow Parliament members.

Silk, who has been serving as a special consultant to President Hilda Heine since January, will now take on the important role of representing the Marshall Islands at the United Nations in New York. This position was previously held by Ambassador Amatlain Kabua, who has been praised for her many years of dedicated service. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kalani Kaneko commended Kabua for her contributions and announced that she has been offered a new role as the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor at the home office.

Kaneko highlighted Kabua’s extensive experience and expressed his gratitude for her willingness to continue serving the Republic in a different capacity. He emphasized the importance of her mentorship for the next generation of foreign service officers and diplomats, noting that her guidance will be invaluable in preparing them for leadership roles.

As Kabua takes some time off before transitioning to her new position, Kaneko looks forward to her return after many years of service abroad. He expressed his appreciation for her commitment to the ministry and her dedication to shaping the future of Marshall Islands foreign relations. The appointment of John Silk as the new Ambassador to the United Nations marks a significant moment for the country’s diplomatic representation on the international stage.
