‘Joby Aviation demonstrates eVTOL in Riyadh: video’

Joby Aviation, a leader in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft industry, has made significant strides in advancing its project. The startup has successfully completed several steps in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification process, with its prototypes flying thousands of miles during rigorous flight tests. One major milestone was a successful demonstration flight in New York City in November 2023.

Following in the footsteps of its Californian competitor, Archer Aviation, Joby has set its sights on the Middle East as the ideal location for launching its eVTOL aircraft. The company has partnered with Dubai to establish what could be the world’s first urban advanced air mobility network and has also struck a deal with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

Saudi Arabia is also a key component of Joby Aviation’s strategic plans. In a significant move, on May 21, 2024, the eVTOL developer signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mukamalah, the aviation arm of Saudi oil giant Aramco, to introduce its operations in the Kingdom. This announcement was made during the Future Aviation Forum held in Riyadh from May 20 to 22, 2024, where Joby Aviation showcased a full-scale mockup of its S4 eVTOL aircraft.

At the forum, AeroTime had the opportunity to meet with Oliver Walker-Jones, Head of Marketing, Communications & Brand at Joby Aviation, for an exclusive tour of the aircraft’s cabin and cockpit. Walker-Jones provided insight into the innovative features onboard the eVTOL aircraft.
