Jazz Festival Honoring Don Keranen with Music by Detroit’s Kris Johnson

Michigan Tech’s jazz program, spearheaded by the late Don Keranen, continues to showcase the incredible talent of its students through the annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Festival. The festival, which features three captivating performances, pays tribute to Keranen’s legacy as the man behind the school’s jazz program.

Jazz Studies Director Adam Meckler is excited to welcome former Count Basie Big Band trumpeter Kris Johnson to join the students on the Rozsa stage. Johnson, a Detroit native, will perform during two of the festival’s shows on Friday night and Saturday evening.

Meckler is thrilled about the opportunity for the students to work with Johnson, who is not only an accomplished musician but also an Emmy-nominated composer known for his work in film scoring. The students have been diligently preparing for the festival, learning new music and honing their skills to deliver outstanding performances.

The festival kicks off on Friday night at 7:30 pm, with Saturday’s events including a master class for prospective Michigan Tech students and middle school and high school band players. Tickets for the festival are as part of the pay-as-you-are-able program.
