‘Indigenous film festival cancels 2024 event, postpones 25th anniversary to June 2025’

The ImagineNative Film + Media Arts Festival, a prominent Indigenous event, will mark its 25th anniversary a year later than planned. Organizers have announced that the festival will be delayed until 2025, effectively canceling the 2024 edition. This decision was made in order to provide more time to support the festival’s growth, including the development of new programming ideas and themes.

Naomi Johnson, the executive director of ImagineNative, highlighted the importance of strengthening the organization by hosting various events in the lead-up to next year’s festival. The programming for the event will be announced later this year. Additionally, the festival will now be permanently shifted from the fall to June, aligning with Indigenous Peoples’ Month.

The ImagineNative Film + Media Arts Festival, which first launched in 2000, is considered the largest annual Indigenous media arts event globally. The upcoming festival is scheduled to take place from June 3 to 8 in Toronto, with an online version running from June 9 to 15.
