Improving Traffic Management at Dubai Schools through Designated Parking and Crossing Areas

Back-to-School Traffic Congestion Hits UAE Roads

The hustle and bustle of back-to-school season is in full swing in the UAE as schools reopened their doors on Monday after a two-month summer break. As parents returned to their daily routines, the anticipated increase in drop-offs and pick-ups caused temporary traffic jams in school districts and surrounding roads, especially in areas with multiple schools.

Experts and educators have identified that traffic congestion around schools often occurs due to some parents taking longer than usual to drop off or pick up their children. To alleviate these issues, schools have implemented various strategies to ensure smooth traffic flow. Designated parking and crossing zones have been established, and skilled security teams are present to effectively manage and direct traffic.

Matthew Burfield, Senior Vice President of Education at GEMS Education and Executive Principal/CEO of GEMS Founders School in Dubai, commended the significant infrastructural improvements made by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). He noted the transformation of the road infrastructure since the school’s establishment nine years ago, with the creation of a six-lane highway in the front and RTA parking in the back. Despite these upgrades, challenges persist during peak times, leading Burfield to encourage parents to arrive early to avoid congestion.

To address traffic challenges proactively, school leaders convene regularly to coordinate schedules and traffic management strategies. Burfield highlighted the collaboration among schools on the same road, such as GEMS Al Barsha National School and Dubai Heights Academy, to adjust timings and minimize overlaps, ensuring a smoother experience for all.

The use of school buses has been emphasized as a key solution to reduce traffic congestion, with over two-thirds of students at GEMS Founders School opting to use these services. Burfield pointed out that prioritizing school buses for entry and exit helps manage traffic effectively and alleviate road congestion.

Apart from logistical improvements, schools have also focused on informing families and ensuring a smooth start to the academic year. Sarah Weaver, Principal at Mamoura British Academy, shared that the school provided a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan to families, emphasizing meticulous planning and excellent signage for safety during drop-offs and pick-ups.

In a similar vein, The Aquila School has reminded families to park and drive safely, with Principal Wayne Howsen encouraging nearby families to consider walking to school if possible as a means to reduce traffic congestion. These proactive measures aim to ease traffic congestion, enhance safety, and support a seamless transition for students and parents alike as schools settle into their routines for the new academic year.

Overall, the combined efforts of schools, parents, and traffic authorities are crucial in ensuring a smooth and efficient back-to-school season in the UAE. By implementing strategic traffic management plans, coordinating schedules, and promoting safe and responsible driving practices, everyone can contribute to a positive and hassle-free school experience for students and families.

As the school year progresses, it is essential for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed to maintaining smooth traffic flow and ensuring the safety and well-being of students during drop-offs and pick-ups. With continued cooperation and proactive measures, the UAE can navigate through back-to-school traffic congestion with ease and efficiency.
