Hancock Lumber Set to Purchase Lumberyard in Massachusetts

Hancock Lumber Expands Footprint into Massachusetts with Acquisition of Johnson Lumber

Hancock Lumber, a prominent player in the lumber industry headquartered in Casco, Maine, is set to extend its operations into Massachusetts through the acquisition of Johnson Lumber, a well-established lumberyard located in Salisbury. This strategic move represents Hancock Lumber’s first entry into the Bay State and marks a significant milestone as it expands its reach within the New England region. The announcement, made public on Thursday, indicated that the transaction is anticipated to close by May 31, though specific financial terms were not disclosed.

With this acquisition, Hancock Lumber will add its twelfth lumberyard to its extensive operations, which employs a total of 725 individuals. All 20 employees of Johnson Lumber, including three second-generation owners, will transition to Hancock Lumber, ensuring continuity of service and expertise at the newly branded location. Starting June 2, the Salisbury yard will operate under the Hancock Lumber name.

This acquisition aims not only to enhance Hancock Lumber’s geographic footprint but also to expand its product offerings. The company plans to introduce its own manufactured wall panels, trusses, and pine products, as well as popular Marvin windows and Tiny Homes, following its acquisition of Tiny Homes of Maine last year. The strategic addition of Johnson Lumber allows for improved distribution and delivery capabilities across northeastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and southern Maine, enabling Hancock Lumber to better serve both contractors and DIY customers.

Johnson Lumber has been serving the community since 1963, transitioning from its origins as a sawmill to a full-service contractor yard. Its strategic location—just two miles from the coast and in close proximity to major highways I-95 and I-495—position it favorably for accessing key markets in the region. The lumberyard occupies a 12-acre site, which features substantial covered storage and an extensive inventory tailored for contractors.

The shared family-oriented ethos of both companies is noteworthy. Hancock Lumber, with a rich history dating back to 1848, is committed to fostering a legacy of excellence in the lumber industry. Kevin Hancock, the company’s chairman and sixth-generation managing owner, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the Johnson family throughout the acquisition process. He emphasized the company’s commitment to reinvesting in the business and enhancing resources to ensure continued growth.

Trish Johnson, the president of Johnson Lumber and a second-generation owner, remarked on the importance of finding a partner that aligns with their values. She stated, “Our family has been focused on finding the right partner to move our family business into the next generation of ownership. Ultimately, choosing to partner with Hancock Lumber came down to finding a company that will honor our values and take care of our people—both employees and customers—for the long run.”

This acquisition illustrates Hancock Lumber’s dedication to strategic growth and community engagement while preserving the legacies of both companies, providing a trusted source for quality lumber and home improvement solutions in Massachusetts and beyond.
