Free Parenting Class Available for Families in Recovery
Susquehanna Valley Mediation to Offer Free Parenting Classes for Individuals in Recovery
Middleburg, Pa.— In response to the growing need for supportive resources for parents in recovery, Susquehanna Valley Mediation has announced the launch of a free, seven-session parenting class, called the Families in Recovery (FiR) program. This initiative is set to commence on April 1, 2024 and aims to equip individuals in substance use recovery with practical parenting skills while fostering a supportive community.
The classes will be held at the Walking Free Clubhouse, located at 8183 Route 522 Ste. 10 in Middleburg, every Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Prior to the sessions, attendees are invited to enjoy a complimentary light breakfast from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, offering participants an opportunity to connect informally before the classes begin.
Shawnee Robel, the FiR program director, emphasized the importance of the program by stating, “This program is for any parent in recovery that is looking to learn some practical tools they can use to help them parent their child. Recovery is a full-time lifestyle, and as parents, we all need support to be the best parent we can be after leaving a life of addiction. This class offers that as well as connection with other families in recovery.” Her remarks underline a critical aspect of recovery—community support—which has been shown to have a significant impact on sustained sobriety and family unity.
Participants who complete all seven sessions will receive a certificate of completion, acknowledging their commitment to both their recovery and their parenting journey. This certification signifies not only the acquisition of newly learned skills but also a tangible achievement in their recovery process.
The Families in Recovery program aims to address the unique challenges faced by parents in recovery, providing resources and a safe space for discussion and learning. Experts often note that parenting can be particularly challenging for those who are navigating sobriety, and programs like FiR are essential in ensuring that parents have the tools they need to succeed.
Interested individuals are encouraged to register for the classes as soon as possible. For more information or to reserve a spot in the program, potential participants can contact Shawnee Robel at 272-444-1024 or via email at familiesinrecovery@svmediation.org.
As the opioid crisis and substance abuse issues continue to affect families across the country, initiatives like the Families in Recovery program represent a beacon of hope, providing essential support to those striving to build healthier families and communities. By investing in parenting education, Susquehanna Valley Mediation is taking a vital step towards breaking the cycle of addiction and fostering a brighter future for families in recovery.
