First AI-powered video creation app, Vids, developed by Google

Google unveiled a new AI-powered video creation app called Vids during its Google Cloud Next ’24 event on April 9th. This new app will be part of Google’s Workspace suite of apps, alongside Drive, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Vids is described as an all-in-one video creation, writing, production, and editing assistant geared towards work-related video projects. Unlike other AI-powered video makers meant for creating aesthetically pleasing clips, Vids is specifically designed for professional use.

Users can start by providing Vids with a prompt, such as “Help me create a sales training video,” and relevant documents. The app will then generate a storyboard within seconds, which can be edited and customized. Users can choose a style and Vids will create a first draft of the video.

After reviewing the draft, users can make changes to the stock videos, images, and background music selected by the app. They can also add a preset voiceover to the video or record their own. Collaboration with colleagues and friends throughout the process is also possible to ensure everyone is satisfied with the final outcome.

Although an official release date for Vids has not been announced, it will be available in Google Workspace Labs in June. Google plans to test and refine the app in Workspace Labs before rolling it out to select Gemini for Google Workspace plans in the future.
