EU anticipates collaborating with Azerbaijan for a successful COP29

The European Union (EU) is eager to work alongside Azerbaijan to ensure a successful outcome at the upcoming COP29, according to the latest Green Diplomacy Council conclusions released by the EU.

Acknowledging the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for hosting COP28 in Dubai and the adoption of the UAE consensus, the Council emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts with all partners, including the Troika – UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil, to achieve the goals of COP29 and COP30.

In pursuit of a cohesive strategy for carbon pricing, the Council urged partners to engage with the EU as it is considered the most effective and cost-efficient method to reduce emissions.

The selection of Azerbaijan as the host country for COP29 was officially announced in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Despite nominations from Armenia and Bulgaria, Armenia ultimately withdrew its candidacy in favor of Azerbaijan following discussions between the Office of the President of Azerbaijan and the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia. Subsequently, Bulgaria also withdrew its candidacy.

On January 4, 2024, Mukhtar Babayev, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, was appointed as the President of COP29.

The EU’s commitment to cooperation with Azerbaijan and other partners indicates a strong determination to address climate change issues and work towards a sustainable future.
