‘Embracing Excellence: Spotlight on ElectriCities’

ElectriCities of North Carolina, Inc. honored 15 North Carolina communities with Public Power Awards of Excellence during the organization’s 2023 Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. These awards recognize exceptional achievement in key categories such as Future-focused, Strengthen Public Power, Provide Superior Power, Customer-centered Innovation, and People.

The People Award specifically celebrates communities that value their employees as their most valuable asset. These communities work towards attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse generation of utility leaders in a changing workforce and technology landscape.

Among the 2022 winners of the People Award are Albemarle, Fayetteville PWC, Greenville Utilities Commission, Kinston, Maiden, New Bern, New River Light and Power, Rocky Mount, Statesville, and Wilson. For example, Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) has implemented various initiatives to support its employees, including expanding career pathways, participating in career fairs, offering intern programs, and providing training and mentorship opportunities.

Similarly, the City of Kinston demonstrates its commitment to its employees by implementing a new pay scale for full-time workers, including those in the electric and customer service departments. This transparent pay scale rewards employees who complete career development programs with promotions and salary increases.

These initiatives showcase the dedication of these communities in valuing their employees and embody the spirit of the People Award of Excellence in Public Power. This recognition highlights the importance of investing in people and fostering a culture of service excellence within public power organizations.
