‘Early EPC activities begin for Ruwais LNG project focusing on low carbon footprint’

ADNOC Advances Low-Carbon LNG Project in Al Ruwais Industrial City

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has taken a significant step forward in its low-carbon LNG project in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi. The company has issued a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) for early engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities for this groundbreaking project.

The LNTP was issued to a joint venture consisting of Technip Energies, JGC Corporation, and National Petroleum Construction Company, as disclosed by ADNOC in a statement on March 12. This early EPC award is a crucial milestone as the project progresses towards the final investment decision (FID), which is anticipated later this year.

Once completed, the Ruwais LNG project will be the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to operate on clean power, positioning it as one of the world’s lowest carbon intensity LNG plants. This initiative aligns with ADNOC’s commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2045.

Fatema Al Nuaimi, Executive Vice President of Downstream Business Management at ADNOC, emphasized the project’s strategic importance, stating that it will enhance ADNOC’s role as a reliable global natural gas supplier and contribute to global energy security. Furthermore, the project is expected to drive economic growth in the Al Dhafra region by bolstering the local industrial ecosystem and attracting additional investments.

The Ruwais LNG project comprises two LNG liquefaction trains with a total capacity of 9.6 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa), significantly increasing ADNOC’s LNG production capacity from 6 mmtpa to approximately 15 mmtpa upon completion.

In late 2023, ADNOC secured a long-term agreement with ENN LNG for the delivery of at least 1 mmtpa of LNG sourced from the Ruwais project. This 15-year agreement marks the first long-term deal for LNG offtake from the Ruwais project, with deliveries slated to commence in 2028 once the facility is operational.

This milestone underscores ADNOC’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its strategic vision for the future of LNG production in the region.
