Discussion with the Artist Tamiko Nishimura

On an exclusive evening event at 6:00 p.m. EDT, Aperture and Alison Bradley Projects are delighted to present a special exhibition walkthrough of “Journeys,” featuring the talented artist Tamiko Nishimura and curator Pauline Vermare. This event sets the stage for the upcoming publication “I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now,” edited by Pauline Vermare and Lesley A. Martin.

“Journeys” marks Tamiko Nishimura’s debut solo exhibition in the United States, curated by Pauline Vermare. The exhibit showcases Nishimura’s unique blend of performance photography, portraiture, and street photography, transcending conventional styles. Her work, characterized by contrasting black and white images that are often blurred or grainy, evokes a captivating and introspective emotional depth.

Attendees can look forward to engaging conversations, accompanied by beverages and snacks. Tamiko Nishimura, a Tokyo College of Photography alumna, has rapidly grown in prominence since her debut in 1973, with her work now included in the esteemed M+ museum in Hong Kong.

Pauline Vermare, an acclaimed photography historian and curator, will be present to share her insights during the event. Vermare’s distinguished career includes serving as the cultural director of Magnum Photos in New York and curating exhibitions at renowned institutions like the International Center of Photography and the Museum of Modern Art.
