Developing AI models for Spanish and other languages in Spain

The Spanish government has recently announced a partnership with IBM Corp, a renowned US computer giant, to develop foundational models of artificial intelligence (AI) specifically tailored for the Spanish language and co-official languages like Catalan, Basque, Galician, and Valencian.

As part of the agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to foster collaboration in the field of AI and AI supercomputing. The primary objective of this collaboration is to propel the development and practical implementation of open, ethical, and responsible generative AI in Spain.

The MoU also outlines the shared goal of creating a comprehensive suite of foundation models encompassing both large language models (LLMs) and small language models proficient in Spanish and co-official languages. This initiative is geared towards advancing the capabilities of AI technologies in linguistic diversity.

IBM Corp stated, “One of the key focus areas of this MoU is to work together on developing leading foundation models that are adept in both large language models and small language models applicable to Spanish and co-official languages.”

Furthermore, the collaboration demonstrates a joint commitment to leveraging AI for the research, development, and validation of new materials to enhance the sustainability of the semiconductor value chain. This strategic partnership underscores the importance of harnessing AI for driving innovation and progress in various sectors.
