‘Couple’s Two-Decade Home Renovation in Silver Lake’
Located in Los Angeles, California, this exceptional home is a true masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. With a footprint of 2,520 square feet, this house was transformed by the talented team at Lovers Unite, led by architect Alan Koch and designer Karen Spector.
Originally purchased by production designer James Chinlund and artist Clare Crespo 17 years ago, this once nondescript home now boasts carefully plotted architectural interventions and material shifts that completely reimagined the interior space. As Chinlund and Crespo desired, the renovation took advantage of the prime location and stunning views overlooking the hills of Silver Lake.
One of the standout features of the renovation is the incorporation of an underutilized outdoor balcony into the interior, creating a new social area and dining room. A wall of windows and a built-in banquette with Opio Prussiana fabric by Pierre Frey perfectly frame the picturesque views. The custom cabinets with an integrated pull made of Douglas fir veneer provide ample storage in the open and inviting kitchen that flows seamlessly into the dining area.
The exterior of the home features wooden panels that hint at the natural materials used inside, while the backyard boasts a stepping stone walkway, lush landscaping, and a pavilion that serves multiple purposes. The interior living spaces are adorned with rough cedar planks, a Togo Michel Ducaroy sectional by Ligne Roset, and other carefully curated furnishings and decor that reflect the homeowners’ unique style.
The lower level of the home offers even more space for entertaining and relaxation, with a second dining space that offers equally stunning views, a stylish sitting room, and a stairwell featuring an original slatted screen designed by Chinlund. The journey to complete this project spanning nearly two decades is a testament to the patience and vision of Chinlund and Crespo. This home is truly a gem that showcases the beauty of thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail.
