Collaboration between Omnispace and MTN to develop satellite IoT and 5G NTN services.

Omnispace and MTN have announced a collaboration to explore the use of S-band satellite services to expand MTN’s wireless service portfolio in their markets. This partnership aims to develop cost-effective global connectivity solutions beyond existing cellular networks by integrating MTN’s terrestrial mobile networks with Omnispace’s non-terrestrial (NTN) network. The companies will leverage 3GPP standards to provide consumer mobile and enterprise IoT services while also developing an ecosystem of compatible devices and software.

CEO of Omnispace, Ram Viswanathan, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that it would offer ubiquitous 5G mobile connectivity by combining satellite and terrestrial networks. He highlighted the importance of delivering a standards-based solution that adds non-terrestrial network connectivity to a wide range of devices and applications.

MTN Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, Mazen MrouƩ, emphasized the strategic role of the collaboration in extending the reach of services and ensuring consistent access to their network. The partnership with Omnispace is seen as a step towards providing digitally inclusive access and supporting a modern connected life for all.

As part of the agreement, Omnispace will develop a next-generation mobile and IoT network designed for MTN markets. In the meantime, the companies will work together to test technology, demonstrate capabilities, and explore use cases using Omnispace’s existing satellites.
