‘Collaboration Between Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines Revealed’
Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines have announced the formation of a Joint Venture (JV) in a move that signifies a deepening of international aviation partnerships. This pivotal agreement, signed during a ceremony at Etihad Airways’ headquarters in Abu Dhabi, marks the first commercial JV between a Middle Eastern airline and a Chinese airline. The JV, which is subject to all necessary governmental approvals, will not involve equity investment.
As part of the partnership, the airlines aim to enhance and expand connectivity between the UAE and China. The collaboration promises to provide travelers with a seamless journey experience across major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, and Kunming, as well as key destinations in the UAE and the broader Middle East and Africa regions.
Scheduled for implementation in early 2025, the joint venture will include the introduction of full reciprocity for their frequent flyer programs by the last quarter of 2024. This will allow passengers to earn points and redeem rewards across both airlines seamlessly.
Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, expressed his excitement about the JV, stating that it marks a significant milestone in the partnership with China Eastern. He believes that the JV will unlock a new era of travel opportunities and boost the economic growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
On the other hand, China Eastern Airlines Chairman WangZhiqing highlighted the importance of the collaboration, especially in the context of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the UAE. He emphasized the strategic partnership between the two airlines and expressed eagerness to deepen cooperation in various business areas. The signing of the JV signifies a new level of collaboration and sets the stage for expanded cooperation between China Eastern Airlines and Etihad Airways.
