Cannes Head Discusses ‘Megalopolis’ Inclusion and Calls Francis Ford Coppola a Member of the Cannes Family

The Cannes Film Festival has officially announced that Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” will be in competition at its 77th edition. Thierry Frémaux, the Cannes delegate general, expressed his happiness at having Coppola as part of the festival’s lineup. Frémaux mentioned how Coppola is not only a two-time Palme d’Or winner but has always been close to Cannes.

Frémaux shared that he had been in touch with Coppola over the past year about the progress of “Megalopolis.” After months of editing, Coppola finally completed the film and decided to show it to Cannes. Although Coppola was considering both Cannes and Venice, he ultimately chose Cannes for the premiere of his film.

This selection marks Coppola’s return to competition after 45 years, with his previous Palme d’Or wins for “Apocalypse Now” in 1979 and “The Conversation” in 1974. Frémaux mentioned that he had a longstanding relationship with Coppola, even before becoming the head of Cannes.

Coppola’s strong ties to France and Cannes were highlighted, especially his close friendship with late producer Paul Rassam and other French producers who supported his work. The Cannes Film Festival is eagerly anticipating the premiere of “Megalopolis” at the prestigious event.
