Awarded RM1.5b subcontract for construction of offshore substation

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MHB), has secured a subcontract to construct a high-voltage direct current platform offshore substation (OSS) valued at RM1.5 billion. The contract, awarded by Petrofac International (UAE) LLC, includes various construction activities such as engineering, fabrication, mechanical completion, load out, sea fastening, and architectural works on an engineering, procurement, and construction basis.

The project, named Nederwiek 1, is seen as a significant milestone for MHB in pursuing sustainable infrastructure development. The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor, emphasized the importance of this contract in supporting TenneT’s two-gigawatt programme in the Netherlands, which aims to advance large-scale offshore wind infrastructure projects crucial for Europe’s energy transition.

With a focus on delivering high-quality solutions and maintaining safety standards, MHB is dedicated to ensuring the success of the project. The OSS platform will consist of a topside weighing around 30,000 tonnes (including equipment) and a jacket weighing approximately 10,000 tonnes. The project is scheduled to take about 36 months, starting fabrication in 2025 with completion expected by 2028.

TenneT’s programme aligns with Europe’s goal of transitioning to a lower-carbon future by installing at least 65 GW of offshore wind energy collectively by 2030. This project reinforces MHB’s expertise in executing complex offshore projects and highlights its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
