‘Approval granted for historic train track’

Preparatory works have begun for a groundbreaking railway that will connect Oman and the UAE, as reported by Hafeet Rail, the organization overseeing the construction of this innovative railway network in Oman.

Hafeet Rail, a partnership between Oman Rail and Etihad Rail, will manage the railway network linking Sohar Port to the UAE National Rail Network, extending to Abu Dhabi. The total investment for this project amounts to billion.

Recent agreements between stakeholders, including Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment, have paved the way for major contracts to be awarded to a collaboration between UAE and Omani companies working together as one team. The civil work contract has been granted to a joint venture led by Trojan Construction Group from the UAE and Galfar Engineering and Contracting from Oman, while Tristar Engineering & Construction and National Infrastructure Construction Company are also part of the alliance. Additionally, the systems and integration contracts have been assigned to a partnership between Siemens and HAC.

The railway network will utilize the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, ensuring top efficiency and safety in line with international standards through full digital train control and GPS tracking technology for enhanced reliability.

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei expressed excitement over the project, emphasizing its role in connecting the two Gulf countries and aligning with the Gulf Railway vision. The project aims to provide a rapid and eco-friendly mode of transportation, reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

The railway line will offer a shorter travel distance compared to traditional routes, catering to both freight and passenger transportation. Trains will reach speeds of up to 200 km per hour, connecting population centers efficiently.

Construction involves building 60 bridges, with some reaching heights up to 34 meters, and tunnels spanning 2.5 km. Advanced rail technologies and innovative engineering solutions will tackle the region’s challenging terrain and weather conditions while maintaining high safety standards.

The project is anticipated to boost local and regional trade, economic diversification, and bilateral relations between Oman and the UAE. By connecting major ports and industrial zones, the railway network promises a significant reduction in shipping costs and transit times, benefiting SMEs in construction, engineering, and logistics sectors.

Overall, Hafeet Rail’s commitment to quality, safety, and environmental sustainability underscores its dedication to delivering an efficient and impactful railway network that will transform transportation between Oman and the UAE.
