Andrea Arnold Awarded Golden Coach Prize at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight

British director Andrea Arnold, known for films like “American Honey” and “Cow,” is set to receive the prestigious 2024 Carrosse d’Or, or Golden Coach Award, at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. The award ceremony will take place on May 15 during the opening ceremony of the Directors’ Fortnight.

Organizers praised Arnold as “an avid explorer of the fringes of society,” highlighting her innovative qualities, courage, and independent-mindedness. The honor, established in 2002 by the Society of French Directors, recognizes filmmakers who push boundaries and challenge conventions. In a letter to Arnold, the board commended her for scrutinizing society from various perspectives in films like “Milk,” “Red Road,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “American Honey,” all of which feature powerful female characters.

Described as a “dynamiter of social film codes” with a talent for exploring the power of bodies and souls, Arnold’s work is celebrated for its bravery, freedom, and ability to constantly reinvent itself. Past recipients of the Golden Coach Award include renowned filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, Jane Campion, and Clint Eastwood.
