Akron Children’s Hospital to Launch Innovative Food Pantry for Disadvantaged Families

AKRON, Ohio — In a progressive initiative aimed at combating food insecurity among families with children facing chronic health issues, Akron Children’s Hospital has announced the forthcoming opening of a “Food Farmacy” at its Boardman campus. The facility is set to launch next week, marking a significant step in addressing the critical intersection of health and nutrition for vulnerable populations.

The Food Farmacy will function as a food pantry specifically designed to support income-eligible families of patients. It aims to alleviate the burden of food insecurity by providing essential supplies sufficient to last for three to five days. The program is particularly targeted at families in need, ensuring that they receive adequate nutrition, which is crucial for the well-being of children with ongoing health challenges.

Families will be referred to the Food Farmacy by primary care and endocrinology providers within the Boardman campus. The pantry will be conveniently located on the first floor of Building A at the Boardman campus. It is set to operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., making it accessible for families to make monthly visits based on their prescribed needs. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Monday at 11 a.m., marking the official inauguration of the Food Farmacy.
