Abundant Natural Light: The Key to This Lowcountry Artist’s Home
Debby Alphin, an artist based in Atlanta and Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, has created a series of playful text pieces, acrylic aphorisms, and funny sayings. One of her paintings emblazoned with the words “CLEAR SKIES AHEAD” perfectly captures the stunning view from her studio in the Sullivan’s vacation home that she shares with her husband of fifty years, Steele. Through the generous use of Marvin windows and doors, clear skies are a constant presence in their residence.
Alphin’s workspace is filled with bright natural light thanks to the strategically placed windows. She keeps her easel facing the window to harness this natural light for her artwork. The studio is not only a creative oasis but also an extension of her joyful sensibility, complete with a sink for rinsing brushes and a white Parsons table for sketching.
The home, designed by architect Amanda Orr and built by 79 West Builders Group, was crafted to be a play space and coastal retreat for Alphin’s large family. With two daughters and four grandchildren, the house is a perfect blend of breathtaking views and family-friendly spaces.
Marvin casement windows in the open kitchen set the tone for the home, allowing ample natural light to flood the space. Angela Means of Means Carney Interiors praises the design of the windows, which adds an old-world charm to the home. The enchanting ambiance continues throughout the house, including the living room where Marvin Ultimate Swinging French doors frame a lush view of the pool.
The screened porch, featuring Marvin Bi-Fold doors, seamlessly connects the indoors with the outdoors, creating a space perfect for entertaining. The spacious living areas, grandkid-friendly second story, and main-floor owners’ suite provide ample room for socializing or peaceful contemplation while gazing at the Atlantic Ocean in the distance.
Alphin’s home is not only a sophisticated haven but also a relaxed gathering place for family and friends to enjoy the beauty of Sullivan’s Island. With its thoughtful design and natural touches, the residence is a true coastal retreat where clear skies are always in view.
