‘October sees a 5% increase in container volume at ports in Saudi Arabia’
Saudi Ports Experience 5% Increase in Container Volume in October
The Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) has reported a significant increase in container throughput for the month of October. A total of 741,905 TEU were handled, reflecting a 5.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
In terms of container traffic, the number of exported containers saw a notable surge of 9.72%, reaching 224,822 TEU. Imported containers also rose by 5.32%, totaling 226,973 TEU. Additionally, transshipment containers showed growth, recording a 2.12% increase.
The ports also successfully handled various types of cargo, including general cargo amounting to 627,637 tonnes, solid bulk cargo of 4.57 million tonnes, and liquid bulk cargo of 11.4 million tonnes.
Maritime traffic saw an increase of 5.46%, with approximately 1,062 ships docking at the ports in October. However, there was a slight decrease in the total tonnage handled, amounting to 24.97 million tonnes of goods.
In October, MAWANI and Saudi Global Ports (SGP) announced plans to create a fully integrated logistics park at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, covering over 1 million square meters.
MAWANI’s achievements were further highlighted when they won the Advanced Port Infrastructure Award at the Landmarks in Logistics Awards 2023, held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This recognition signifies MAWANI’s commitment to excellence in port operations and infrastructure development.
