Government to keep a watch on Mopani situation following handover by Kabuswe
The Zambian government has pledged to closely monitor the working conditions of contractors at Mopani Copper Mines, following the mine’s recent takeover by Abu Dhabi’s International Resources Holdings (IRH). Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe emphasized the importance of ensuring fair wages and decent working conditions for all workers involved in the operation.
In a recent radio interview on Radio Mafken’s express chit-chat programme, Minister Kabuswe stated that the government is fully committed to ensuring that the benefits of Mopani’s transition to a new investor extend beyond just the employees of the mine, but also to contractors and suppliers. This move is aimed at promoting a more equitable and sustainable mining industry in Zambia.
Furthermore, Heartson Mabeta, the Member of Parliament for Kankoyo, expressed optimism about the economic impact of Mopani’s acquisition by IRH. He believes that this change in ownership will bring about positive economic outcomes not only for the mine itself but also for the country as a whole.
With the government’s commitment to overseeing fair labor practices and the positive outlook from local leaders, the future of Mopani Copper Mines under its new ownership is looking promising for all stakeholders involved.
