A Family Tradition Transformed into a Nationwide Tribute to Veterans

Wreaths Across America Honors Veterans Nationwide

ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — On a crisp December day, millions of citizens, including families, friends, veterans, and volunteers, gathered across the United States to participate in Wreaths Across America (WAA), an organization dedicated to honoring veterans and educating the public about the sacrifices made for freedom. This event, which has become an annual tradition, marks the pinnacle of WAA’s efforts to commemorate the service of military personnel and their families.

Founded in 2007, Wreaths Across America organizes the laying of wreaths on the graves of veterans during the holiday season. The initiative traces its roots back to 1992, when Karen Worcester’s husband, who was involved in the wreath business, began placing wreaths at their local cemetery in Maine. The effort captured the attention of a Pentagon photographer, which prompted a surge of community support. “The people came to us,” Worcester recounted. “This whole idea wasn’t ours; we were lifted up by volunteers and still are.” This grassroots movement has evolved into a national phenomenon, driven by the dedication of individuals committed to honoring the sacrifices of those who served in the armed forces.

As Wreaths Across America marks its annual event, participation has expanded significantly, with nearly 4,908 locations across the nation taking part, including Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for over 400,000 veterans. The goal for this year is to place over three million wreaths, with an estimated 4 million volunteers contributing to the effort. This assembly of volunteers highlights the strong sense of community that WAA has fostered since its inception.

The organization not only honors those who have served but also plays a vital educational role. Events are organized to teach younger generations about the sacrifices made by veterans, instilling a deep appreciation for freedom and the significance of active citizenship.

In recent years, Wreaths Across America has attracted attention from various sectors, further emphasizing the need to support veterans and their families. As lawmakers propose new initiatives to bolster healthcare for veterans, the values promoted by WAA remain central to the ongoing dialogue about the treatment and recognition of those who have served.

As families lay wreaths on graves, they not only remember individuals but also symbolize the collective gratitude of a nation that prides itself on honoring its heroes. The impact of this initiative resonates far beyond the cemetery grounds, reminding everyone of the price of freedom and the importance of service, community, and remembrance.
