Pixellated neighborhood in Abu Dhabi completed by MVRDV
Construction of the Pixel development in Abu Dhabi is complete, marking a significant milestone in the architectural landscape of the city. Designed by Dutch architect MVRDV, this 85,000 sq m mixed-use complex is set to redefine residential typologies in the UAE.
The centerpiece of the project is a communal plaza where seven towers converge to create a dynamic and inviting space. This plaza is surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and shops on the ground floor, while the upper levels house amenities such as a gym, medical clinic, early learning center, and offices. The design ethos of Pixel aims to foster a sense of community and connectivity among its residents.
One of the distinguishing features of Pixel is its unique architectural concept, inspired by the design of an oyster. The outer façades of the buildings are composed of concrete panels embossed with a pattern reminiscent of oyster shells, created by artist Nicole Martens. This intricate design element adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the overall aesthetic of the development.
In terms of residential offerings, Pixel caters to a diverse range of residents with units ranging from studio apartments to three-bedroom homes. Each building within the complex features a mix of smaller and larger properties, ensuring that there is something for everyone.
Jacob van Rijs, the founding partner of MVRDV, expressed his vision for Pixel, stating, “With Pixel, we challenged the residential typologies that have become the norm in the UAE.” By deviating from the conventional tower structures prevalent in the region, Pixel aims to create a more sustainable and socially engaging living environment for its residents.
Pixel represents the first phase of the Makers District in Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island, a development project spearheaded by IMKAN. Positioned as the new heart of the city, the Makers District seeks to redefine urban living and foster a vibrant community spirit.
In conclusion, Pixel is not just a collection of buildings; it is a testament to innovative design, sustainable living, and community engagement. By pushing the boundaries of traditional residential architecture, MVRDV has set a new standard for urban development in Abu Dhabi. As the architectural landscape of the city continues to evolve, developments like Pixel will play a crucial role in shaping the future of urban living.
