‘Etihad and China Eastern form partnership agreement’

Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines have announced the signing of a groundbreaking Joint Venture (JV) to solidify their strategic partnership and enhance travel options for passengers. This historic agreement, signed at Etihad’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, represents the first commercial joint venture between a Middle Eastern and a Chinese airline.

The JV will pave the way for the development and expansion of routes between the UAE and China, creating a more robust combined network. Passengers can look forward to seamless travel experiences between major Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, and Kunming, and key cities in the UAE, Middle East, and Africa regions.

In addition, both airlines will introduce full reciprocity to their frequent flyer programs by the final quarter of 2024, enabling travelers to earn points and redeem rewards when flying with either airline. The joint venture cooperation is expected to be fully implemented by early 2025, pending regulatory clearances.

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, expressed excitement about the partnership with China Eastern, emphasizing the enhanced travel options and exceptional value it will bring to passengers. He believes this JV will unlock new travel opportunities, benefiting not only travelers but also contributing to the economic growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Wang Zhiqing, Chairman of China Eastern Airlines, highlighted the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the UAE in 2024. He emphasized the significance of deepening cooperation between the two countries through strategic collaborations like the Belt and Road Initiative. Wang expressed eagerness to expand collaboration with Etihad Airways across various business areas, strengthening the partnership between the two airlines.

The signing of this JV marks a new era of collaboration between Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines, promising exciting travel prospects and mutual growth for both airlines.
