‘1st genetic counseling master’s program launched in the UAE’

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) University in Abu Dhabi has launched the first master’s program in genetic counseling in the country. This pioneering initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Genetics and Genomics at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH).

The program aims to provide advanced academic specializations to produce a pool of highly skilled medical graduates who can meet the demands of healthcare facilities and enhance clinical medical consultations for the community.

Dr. Muna Al Saffar, the Director of the Genetic Counseling Program at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, highlighted the significance of the Master of Genetic Counseling program. She emphasized that this two-year academic and clinical journey is tailored for individuals passionate about supporting and improving the well-being of individuals and families at risk or diagnosed with genetic disorders.

The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on individuals with genetic conditions and reduce the burden of genetic disorders in the community. It focuses on nurturing clinical counseling capabilities across various areas, including pediatric genetic assessment, prenatal diagnosis, cancer and adult genetics, psychological support, patient rights, clinical genetic research, and community service.

Overall, the introduction of the first master’s program in genetic counseling at the UAE University marks a significant step towards advancing genetic healthcare in the region and enhancing the quality of medical services available to the population.
